2020 Camp-In: Virtual Gala and Auction

July 29, 2020 @ 7:00 pm - 7:40 pm

Christodora’s 2020 Virtual Gala highlighted our Dedication, Resiliency and Impact!

Overview from the night-of: During any other year, our Manice Education Center would be filled with campers right now, embarking on backcountry hiking and canoeing expeditions, enjoying fresh food from the garden …but sadly, camp must remain closed this summer. This is especially disappointing because the families of Christodora students belong to cohorts that have been disproportionately affected by Covid-19: at-risk frontline workers, higher rates of illness, unemployment and food insecurity. The pandemic has highlighted the necessity of everything that Christodora stands for: helping young people to access nature; honor the environment; embrace science and scientific inquiry; develop resilience through community; focus on the future– and relax and have fun!

Celebrating the Essential and Continuing Christodora’s Work

At our “stay at home” gala, we honor the intrepid teachers on the front line who have given so much of their passion and expertise to our mission. We will raise the funds to broaden our ability to reach students where they are, despite deep budget cuts that will remove funding for our partnership programs with schools.

Last week, we launched our virtual “Camp GORP”, bringing engaging environmental science, team-building, leadership, art, horticulture and birding activities into our students’ homes. We even have story time and skits at the evening “campfire!”

During the spring, we continued to enrich middle school science classrooms with live drop-ins and specially-created mini-videos and supporting materials including “Getting Outside with Christodora” and “Nature Mysteries.”

Our weekend New Youth Conservationists had meaningful zoom meet-ups throughout the spring, including career mentoring panels with Christodora alumni.

Our program manager Alejandro Vinueza created a “Winging It With Alejandro” birding series, filmed by his sister from their fire escape in Washington Heights. Take a look– guaranteed to make you laugh! Episode 1: house sparrow and Episode 2: northern cardinal.
