New Youth Conservationists

Making a Difference in the City

newyouth
Instilling a Sense of Place, Belonging and Stewardship

Imagine spending your weekend knee-deep in the Bronx River, surrounded by new and old friends working together to protect and preserve beautiful spaces. You don’t have to leave NYC to find wildlife. Get outside, get active and get excited about science and nature with an energetic community of new and old friends!
  • We are able to escape buildings and buses…to step outside, clean up a place our entire community shares, and feel we have made a difference.

  • I love the feeling of getting to smell a lot of green trees and grass. We do tree and insect identification. There are even fox tracks. There is wildlife in the garden!

newyouth4Christodora’s award-winning New Youth Conservationists (NYC) program meets after school and on weekends to perform weeding, planting and clean-up tasks, conduct ecological research and enjoy field trips to natural sites around the city. Some projects include restoration of the Bronx River over its mile-long stretch through the New York Botanical Garden and constructing a nature trail in the Bronx Park.

Join the Citizen Scientist Community!

Take what you’ve learned at Manice or in the classroom about being a “conservationist” and use it to make the city a better place. New Youth Conservationists is a great way to reunite with camp buddies, make new friends, and even fulfill required high school community service hours. Bonus: it’s free!

In June 2008, NYC students were the proud recipients of the 2008 Congressman Jose E. Serrano Award for Youth Leadership “for their leadership and initiative in the restoration of the Bronx River.”
Did you know…
  • There are over 50,000 trees in the streets of the Bronx.
  • The Bronx River is NYC’s last freshwater river.
  • Hawks can fly at more than 150 mph, especially while diving.
  • Female hawks are larger in size than males.
  • Sunflowers are able to absorb radiation.

A greenhouse protects the plants inside by blocking out some of the more harmful aspects of the environment like harsh winds, heavy rains, or extreme temperature fluctuations. It also traps the warm air inside and keeps the air around the plants moist and humid, making it the best environment for the plants to flourish. You will get to see firsthand how greenhouses work by making your own — with a balloon!
