New York City Programs
Christodora Winter Ecology In School Program |
A cornerstone of Christodora is our student-centered, inquiry based, hands-on programming. Since 2001, the Christodora Winter Ecology In-School Program (CWEP) has brought experiential environmental education to New York City middle school classrooms; we currently reach some 1600 students a year in our partner public schools, primarily based in the Bronx and Upper Manhattan. Through a series of seven hands on environmental science lessons, we strive to make basic concepts such as watersheds, bio-diversity and human impact, clear but also relevant to each student, causing positive shifts in thought and action.
A curriculum based on feedback from our partner schools has recently been implemented, and supports the NYC DOE Scope and Sequence and is also aligned with the New York State Standards for Science. Three core lessons lay the foundation for further exploration into ecology and our personal impact on the planet. Science teachers can then pick from a menu of 10 additional lessons for more focused in-depth local investigations of related topics.
We believe that by facilitating meaningful lessons that relate directly to the students and their local environment, the educational experience is connected to real life and encourages an interest and passion for the environment. The most motivated students can choose to participate with Christodora on field trips and other afterschool opportunities. With a new enthusiasm for nature and the environment, students can continue their education at the Manice Education Center in Massachusetts. During woodland, pond and meadow explorations, hiking, canoeing and teamwork experiences, or challenge course activities, students can share in our enthusiasm for nature and feel empowered about making a positive and lasting impression on the world.
